Could somebody please explain to me in what scenario you wouldn't tick this box? The time dimension in the GO package has it ticked at all levels and as do most other dimensions.

Consider this scenario:
Time dimension, one layer is year, the next one is Month.
If you set Month as unique, it will aggregate month regardless of year. Most likely you would like to get aggregation by Year and Month.
If you do not check the unique check box for month, the key for the level will be combined with the next level key: "Year, Month".
