Hello all,

I am very new to Cognos.
Could anyone let me know the difference between Impromptu and report studio.
According to my understanding Impromptu is the previous version of report studio .Is this correct.
Kindly suggest me.

Many Thanks in advance

MFGF

Hi,

Not exactly.  Impromptu is a Windows-based reporting tool, designed back in the early 90s. It needs to be installed locally on an author's PC, and will report off a single relational data source.

Report Studio is a web-based reporting authoring environment, included as part of the Cognos 8 architecture.  It can be used to create reports from data spanning multiple data sources of multiple types.

Impromptu and Cognos 8 have entirely different architectures, and are completely different animals.

MF.

Hi MF,

Thanks for your quick response.
Could you please tell me whether impromptu is used by any organization these days.
If possible could you provide me any link to start learning impromptu.
I am learning Cognos 8 BI ,Do I need to learn impromptu too.
Kindly clarify.

Thanks

Hi,

Yes, many businesses still use Impromptu.  It is still being developed and supported by IBM.

Take a look on the IBM website for details of Impromptu courses running in your geography.  As I recall, there are a couple of courses - one for authoring and one for administration.

Impromptu is not part of Cognos 8, so unless you plan to use Impromptu as well as Cognos 8, I see no reason for you to need to learn it.

MF.
