Analyst: Startup halted due to system does not support files and directories with long names" - keep getting this when trying to launch Analyst. Please advise.... Perhaps any've seen it before.

It's a standard XP Pro install over SQL2000.

cheers,

There is a setting in the control set that controls whether MS-DOS compatible 8.3/8.4 file names should be generated on NTFS partitions. Disabling this feature can increase the performance on high usage partitions that have large amount of files with long filenames, but will also cause Analyst or Contributor not to open.

Sorry to say this, but you will have to uninstall PLanning and make a new installation. Here is how to solve this problem:

- uninstall the Planning software from the computer(s)

Then:

Open a registry editor
a: Select Start - Run and type Regedit
b: Select Start - Run and type Regedt32
2. Navigate to the key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem\
3. Change the regdword for NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation to a value of 0
4. Reboot the machine

Then

- reinstall the Planning software
(if this doesn't work, try reinstalling to a different folder and possibly avoiding paths with spaces in them)

Hi Craig, thank you for help.
I reinstalled planning anyway as nothing found on the support KB.
I'll follow your instructions.
Indeed this parameter was set to 1.

I suspect XP SP3 install might have changed that (?)
