I just started using FWM 8.3 this week and I wanted to know what the differences are between the Physical vs Business Views?  Is it comparable to the Tables & Folders in previous versions of Cognos FWM?  Should I show one over the other to the users creating reports in the package?  Thanks in advance for your input.

Sort of similar...yes

Physical View will include Data Source Query Subjects that pull the metadata from the database tables/views/synonyms, using (preferably) the "Select * From tablename" format.  In so doing, you preserve the capability of Cognos to produce minimized SQL requests.

Physical View is typically NOT exposed to the reporting environment.

The Business View contains the Model Query Subjects, built from query subjects in the Physical View, that ARE exposed for the report authoring.

This is a typical 2 Tier model.

More common these days is a 3 tier model, where there is a Development layer between the Physical and Business Views.  The Devlopment layer is where the bulk of the modeling is done, including setting up the Relationships, Determinants, Query and Query Item renaming, model filters, model calculations, etc...

Good Luck... M

We started on Cognos FWM in the very early days (late 2004), when they referred to the 'Business View' as the 'presentation Layer', which gives some idea of what it is used for,  It is the user-friendly perspective that is intended to 'simplify' things.
