Does Cognos Express include Query Studio & Report Studio?
Can we import C8 reports into Cognos Express?
Can we use C8 packages/models in Cognos Express?

kolonell

Cognos Express does include Query and Report Studio (but no Analysis Studio).
It could be possible to import (deployment) some reports into Cognos Express but be aware than not all datasources are supported in Express. with that I mean that Express doesn't allow you to connect to ALL the same types of datasources the enterprise version lets you.

Is there a link to what datasources Express will support?

Kolonell,

Just to be clear, the report authoring component in Cognos Express IS Cognos 8 Report Studio.  Express is mostly just a licensing change.  Any reports you authored in Cognos 8 RS are just fine in Cognos Express.

Please feel free to send me a message if you have any questions regarding Express or Cognos 8, including a migration :)

Chris - have you actually tried this?  Reports authored in Express will migrate up to Cognos 8 just fine, but there is no support for reports going the other way.  One of my colleagues did try to restore a C8 deployment in Express a while ago and ran into some issues, but as he's away sunning himself at the moment I can't find out what the issues were or whether he managed to resolve them.

Feel free to post any questions on the forum so that the community can chip in to answer them, and so the answers are listed on here to help others with similar issues.

MF.

Maybe I should clarify. A RS report specification (XML) can be migrated back and forth between Cognos 8.4.2 and Cognos Express, and yes I've done it as I flip back and forth between doing Express and Cognos 8 demos.  As for packages and other content store items, I don't think the migration is as smooth backwards to Express given the architecture changes.  Let me know what issues your friend ran into, it would be great to know where issues may arise in the future.  Thanks MFGF!

Hi Chris,

8.4.2?  No such version exists currently.  Do you mean 8.4.1 with Fix Pack 2 applied?  Sorry - not being picky - I just want to prevent the inevitable flood of posts saying "Where can I download 8.4.2 from?" :)

When you are referring to migrating back and forth, do you mean using a deployment archive, or copying/pasting the XML report spec from within Report Studio?

Just curious!

Cheers! :)

Yes FP2, its just my quick way to say that... maybe its regional lingo :)  Thanks for clarifying for the others.

And I was indeed referring to copy/paste XML spec from Report Studio across.  The version parameter may need to be changed from CX to C8, its been a while since I've gone that way.  I can try it again today, I know there is no changes necessary from C8 to CX (I spend most of my time migrating content back to Express from TM1 and Cognos 8 due to recent midmarket focus).

Thanks Chris - much appreciated! :)

So at this time you haven't migrated any C8 framework manager projects to Cognos express?

MFGF

Just as an update - yes, I have now successfully taken a Cognos 8.4.0 FM project and opened it in Express.  I have also managed to import from a Cognos 8.4.0 deployment archive.  Just be careful when doing the latter that you don't import Metrics packages or packages based on OLAP sources other than TM1...
