Hello all,

i'm corruntly configuring our Cognos 8.4 installation and i'm wondering about the following:

We have bought a number of different licenses e.g. Recipients, Enhanced Consumers, Business Analists etc.
I'm trying to link our users to these licenses, but i can't seem to find the correct roles? In the Cognos Administration > Security i see many different roles, but not all our licences are present. For example, i can't find recipient.

Does anyone know the correct translation of licenses to Cognos roles?

Many thanks in advance

david.stachon

Those license roles on the agreement versus the product are always changing and it is confusing....

I would suggest asking your sales rep to clarify. Because it's now IBM, this is something you can't afford to make a mistake on because they have no lenience in this respect.

good luck.

Recipient in Cognos 8 is called Readers

Thanks for the replies.

Recipients translate to Readers? I set up some test users with this role, but then they are still able to run reports with drill down functions. This shouldn't be happening should it? Cognos/IBM sales told us that recipients are only able to open flat reports with no advanced functionality.

I highly suggest following David's advice. You want to be 100% sure that the roles you set up in Cognos Connection match your license needs 1-1. The 8.4 role set up function is a huge improvement over the past versions, but there is a learning curve in the community about what the role translations mean (in regards to current license and needs).

Contact your IBM rep, and make them work for you. That's what they are there for.

I have, and i'm waiting for a response. Thx.

A bit odd... I got a couple of READERS user in our environment, and they are only able to open Report Output in all format (except HTML).

Want to double check that the user that you've set up for testing does not belong to Consumers role.

hpmkruit

indeed odd, so i double checked.

Reader users are not members of any other role. The Everyone role (Why in godsname does this exist AND is applied to every role by default) has been removed of all roles.

Still a reader can view a report via Cognos Viewer in HTML, PDF, XML and Excel.

Please ignore my previous posts... I was telling lies.

Which version of Cognos do you have?

I have 8.4 GA and I do have a Cognos role called RECIPIENT

hpmkruit

I have 8.4 too, what does GA stand for?

josepherwin

GA = General Availability.

Because there was the previous version of 8.4 called FCS (First Customer Shipment)

Probably a silly advice, but did you check all the entries page? (I mean, did u limit the entries in the page between 1 - 25)

My Recepients role currently available right before Report Administrators role.

Haha, that would be a good one yes. But unfortunately i've already set the default list lenght to 999, so there isn't a next page. Thanks anyways

Edit: The one right before Report Administrator is Readers here. I'm assuming it's a new name for Recipients or something. Hopefully Cognos can shed some light on this...

I had the same problem with this translation of license roles and roles of the internal cognos namespace. I found a translation like this

Cognos 8 License Role   Cognos 8 Namespace    Studio Access    Characteristics
BI Administrator Directory Administrator All StudiosAll capabilities Includes Framework Manager and OLAP builder

hope it helps.
