TM1 vs Planning

Hello,
The company I currently work for is looking at replacing Planning with TM1 (we aren't very deep into planning and have only 1 model built). I was wondering if anyone could provide a high-level compare/contrast of the two systems.

While I have worked with COGNOS to discuss this, I would like to hear opinions from the users.

Any insight would be great.

Thanks.

I come from a Planning background, but I have asked this question and as far as I undestand TM1 copes with MUCH bigger cube sizes (basically as big as you could ever want!) whereas Planning has a limit of between 30m - 40m before things start breaking.

Planning, on the other hand, is much easier to distribute (via Contributor for example) so that you can have many more users inputting data.

The way they achieve their calculations is similar but different...so much so that a Plannig User would not automatically intuit how to use TM1 and vice-a-versa.

I also undersatnd that Cognos intend to use the 'back end' of TM1 in their Contributor Planning product...in other words to try and get a best of both worlds solution.  But who knows when this will happen.

Anyway hope this is of some help!

This helps....I will post a version of the document that I create for others to see.

TM1 has its biggest strength with its 64 bit MOLAP (in memory engine). This means that the capacity is much bigger , and the data sits in the RAM for faster access in contrast to the Planning engine which is either SQL Server or Oracle or any other database server.

TM1 has its own database for its objects so you dont have to maintain a separate server.

TM1 is much easier and simpler and faster to start or implement.

I think IBM's Vision is going to be 'leading' in the development roadmap of the cognos planning tools, so my gut feeling is that the new Cognos Express is going to incorporate the TM1 technology on the back-end and the Planning Workflow ( contributor) on the front-end, and that TM1 and Planning will no longer be developed any further.

Qui vivra, verra  ;D !

Kind of 'Yes and No'. Cognos Express incorporates TM1, parts of C8, and Executive Viewer. Planning is promised but not in the first release. But...

The future planning tool will be distinct from Cognos Express and will incorporate 'Contributor' (with workflow) over a TM1 engine.

My own view is that TM1 will survive as a standalone product as there are a number of other types of tasks it does well which aren't 'Planning' and are not 'mid-market'. Having said that, if your project fits within the CE limitations (main one being 100 users) it seems a no brainer to me. I wish we'd had it to sell 5 years ago.
