Has anyone managed to do the 8.4 client installation on more than one machine?

I have a problem with the installation of Cognos Planning 8.4 rich client. I have installed it on one computer using the big "Install now" button that pops up whenever trying to open an e.list item if you haven't installed it before.

However when I log in to another machine I can't open an e.list item. It tries to open a file that is not associated with any program.

It seems like parts of the installation but not all of it is saved in your profile and therefore you don't get the installation button once again.

For example in the registry on the second computer I have an entry called Cognosrcp, but under application data in documents and settings I don't have the cognosrcp folder which I have on the computer where I first installed it.

Is there any way to get around this except installing from the CD being local admin?

Hi Craig,

Just out of interest, was the install on the 2nd machine, done in the same way? or was it actually from a push of the MSI package?

It seems that the CogRCP file type association with the JRE hasn't been done, hence why it attempts to open what i am guessing is a .cogrcp file.

If you go into control panel-->Folder Options - under File Types, find an extension that reads COGRCP, is this associated to anything?

Hi, actually there isn't an installation on the second machine, or not a complete one at least

All installations are done from the web client, i.e by clicking the "Install now" button when the user first open an e.list item, so no msi files have been pushed to the clients by an administrator.

I think the problem is that the user has made the installation this way on one computer and then when he logs on to his other machine part of the installation is associated with his user profile on the network and therefore a new installation is not triggered by the webclient.

For example when loggin on to the computer he gets a message that startup.cogrcp could not be found and then when he tries to open an e.list item a .cogrcp file is downloaded and the second machine doesn't know what program to open it with.

It seems like the startup.cogrcp file is put in the startup folder in windows during the installation, but of course only on the first machine where the software were installed. Yet it seems like the registry edit made by the installation is on the user's profile (I found the cogrcp entry in the registry of both machines although the installation has only been made on the first machine) and I guess it is this that prevents the software to trigger a new installation for the second machine.

I tried to copy the cogrcp folder from application data from the first machine to the other machine but that didn't help, but perhaps it would work if I copied the startup.cogrcp file as well to the startup folder and made sure that the cogrcp extension is associated with cognosrcp.exe?

This solution is of course a little bit too technical for the end users (if it even works, haven't tried yet), so I wish there would be a way to trigger a new installation with that big, nice "Install now" button on the second machine and for all other users that have more than one computer.

To be honest I don't know since this is an environment of a customer (I work as a consultant), but I would guess that they have roaming profiles since the registry settings seem to follow with the user's profile no matter what computer he logs on to in the network.

I guess this should be ok, but in that case I would like the cognosrcp folder under application data to follow with the user profile as well, but maybe that is something that must be set up with this roaming profile concept?
