Multiple date fields, single time dimension?

Hello ,

I am relatively new to Cognos (forgive my misuse of terminology) and have been tasked with learning how to create some basic reports for our team.

I have a question about building a model from multiple data sources, with date fields in each data source, and creating relationships in such a way that I can report using a single time dimension.

example:

Data Source A         Data Source B
Date, X Value          Date, Y Value

Report:
Year, Month, X value, Y Value

Is the correct approach to create time dimensions for each data source and then create a relationship between the two?

I'd say this is +/- academic. With 2 datasources the Cognos server will need to perform the join between the 2 datasets itself (I mean AFTER fetching the data from the databases)
Creating the relationship between the 2 timedimensions sounds like a good enough proposition IF this is the common dimension that you will use between data from the 2 datasources
