Gurus
Being a newbie to CRN got a couple questions, If any one can answer with realtime scenarios/examples its really greatly appreciated.
1. We have different reports under the folder "My folder" , if so how do we email them as attachments so that others can open in their reportstudio? If not what is the procedure to email the reports as attachments?
2.. In Report Studio what are tabular sets/facts/dimension? tabular model? how r they used in realtime scenario?
3. usage of Aggregate and semi aggregate properties @ Frame Work Manager (FWM)? their realtime purpose?

thank you very very much,
Sarasudu.

I believe everything you asked could have been answered very easily if you read the manuals. They are PDF and searchable.  Also, cognos support has a searchable knowledgebase and documentation.

Few problems with your questions, in my opinion anyways.

1. "We" have different reports under My Folders? This is a private directory for each user.
2. "how do we email them as attachments so that others can open in their reportstudio".. Umm..You need others to edit the reports? That is what ReportStudio is for you know?
3. what are tabular sets/facts/dimension? tabular model? You just asked about the basic functionality of nearly all of  report studio
4. "Frame Work Manager"..I wont even go here.

You basically just laid out a series of questions that can be answered in the manuals and any answer given here definately will not be enough to replace those.

PLEASE Read the rules and then the manual.

Thanks Austin for your reply.

Few problems with your questions, in my opinion anyways.

1. "We" have different reports under My Folders? This is a private directory for each user.
Sarasudu: I understand that its private dir for each user but as of now I have sample reprots in my folder. But I want to send you as attachemnt thru email, so that you can execute in ur CRN and see the results.

2. "how do we email them as attachments so that others can open in their reportstudio".. Umm..You need others to edit the reports? That is what ReportStudio is for you know?
Sarasudu: Yes Austin, others should edit but cant access them . so we email them just like word docs so that they can .... etc. I think you know what I meant??

3. what are tabular sets/facts/dimension? tabular model? You just asked about the basic functionality of nearly all of  report studio
Sarasudu: Yes , have been thru it he told all definitions and a little bit of each. but in real time world how do we use them in query explorer.

4. "Frame Work Manager"..I wont even go here.
Sarasudu: Can you PLEASE explain that what you meant u wont even go there? you mean that report developers need not access the FWM? In real world will they or not?

I have read the manuals and I did unserstand the basics but I am looking more towards the real time examples ..... as manuals just they tell may be only 1 or 2 pages about each topic. I think there is diff b/n real time and theoritical.

thanks a lot Austin,

I feel that u have to  go throuh document once more..He even explains u the usage of each element..and how u use them in ur reports depend on the report requirements..there is no such guidelines that u have to use this approach only for this report...

Regarding ur 4th question i feel the report autors should not have access to the FM model. Again in Real world it depends on situation..i am been working with a team of 4 in which all of them have the FM access but in my previous project only 2 members of team of 5 had the FM access previlieges.

OK.Ã,  Here are some answers to your questions, although they are by no means comprehensive.

1. If you want remote users simply to be able to view the output from a report, you can use the 'run with options' button for the report in Cognos Connection, select the 'save the report' radio button, then go into advanced options and check the 'send the report via email' checkbox.Ã,  Click on the link to edit the email options, and you can specify the recipient(s).Ã,  If you want remote users to be able to modify the report in Report Studio, you would either need to have it saved on the Public Folders page where they can find it, or else in Report Studio use the 'copy to clipboard' option, then paste the report definition into wordpad, and email the wordpad document to them.Ã,  The remote user would then need to copy the definition from wordpad, and in Report Studio, open report from clipboard.

2. A tabular model is the section of the report which defines what data is read in from the database, and how it is read.Ã,  It's here you will find the SQL query for the report, and properties such as whether or not to use ReportNet's default grouping and aggregation, as well as filters which can be applied before or after this default aggregation.
Ã,  A tabular set is a mechanism to allow set-based operations on data being read in.Ã,  It will always have two child tabular objects (often tabular models), and will bring the data together from each by using union, intersect or except (your choice).Ã,  The rules are that the child tabular objects should each return the same number of columns, each column having the same datatype as the corresponding column from the other child object.
Ã,  A fact (at the Query level of the report) is a column on which grouping has not been defined by you in the report.
Ã,  A dimension (at the query level of the report) is a column on which grouping has been defined by you in the report.

3.Ã,  The RegularAggregate property of a Fact query item in Framework Manager (here in Framework Manager the term 'Fact' means that the data item is a measure or KPI of some kind - different to point 2 above) dictates the default aggregation that ReportNet will use on that query item when it is used in a report.Ã,  It will always be a numeric value, and the default setting is sum.Ã,  It is important to change this to an appropriate aggregate type for each fact query item, so for example it would be inappropriate to sum a 'credit limit' fact item.Ã,  The SemiAggregate property is reserved for data coming from SAP - it does not apply to 'normal' relational source data.Ã,  If you need to use it, look it up in the manual, but if you are not reading from SAP, don't bother - it's not used.

All of these questions and many more can be answered both by looking through the documentation and attending relevant ReportNet training courses - I'd strongly recommend this if you want to get the best out of the product.

Best regards,

MF.
