Cube build automation ideas

Before I start creating scripts, I just wanted to get some ideas on what others are doing for automating Cognos.
We are running Cognos BI 8.3 and SQL Server 2005. Both are on Windows 2003 Server.
Cognos is on one server and SQL Server is on another.
We currently have scheduled tasks in SQL Server for loading data into our data warehouse and Windows scheduled tasks for building the cubes.
I want a better automation process where it is one continuous process of loading data and building cubes and not 2 disconnected processes.

So, any suggestions?

You may be able to do it using the Sql Server Agent job scheduling tool.  Most places would use a 3rd party scheduling tool like Autosys or Control M.

hello,

you might need a enterprise scheduling tool like control-m to achieve your objective. i think you know that cognos supplies scripts for building cube in the backend. these cubes basically run the rsservers.h script with parameters. you will need to customise the these scripts to suit your infrastructure.

hope this helps to some extent.

You can consider doing this

1. Installing Cognos Transformer on the server with SQL Server to trigger the job based on DWH Loads
2. Build the cubes using SQL Server and Transfer to Cognos Server
3. Use CubeSwap or Conn utility to swap the refershed cube
