Hi,

I would like our users to execute events (event studio) which triggers planning macros on cognos connection without adding users to Planning Admin Rights. is there any way?

Thanks,
Aditya

I think, you can "chain" these events to start agents that run contrib macros from user with admin rights

first of all thanks for responding,
the problem is, i dont want to give users admin rights. with admin rights, they can directly execute events w/o creating agents.
i want to find out ways to execute planning macros w/o givving users admin rights.

one more thing, we are 8.3

sascha

Try this:

  • Create macro in CAC, check 'Publish to Connection'
  • Locate macro in connection with sys admin in 'Cognos Administration' -> 'Configuration' -> 'Content Administration' -> 'Planning' -> 'Macro' - Your macro (path in 8.4 - may differ in 8.3)
  • Set view / exec / traverse rights for your user who should be able to run this macro
  • Create 'New job' in public folder (or any location you want) and add you macro as job step
  • Allow your user to read / exec / traverse this job

Your user should now be able to trigger this macro. There is no need to use event studio this way. I never tried this in a live environment or in a project - just did it as a test case on my VM. So it would be great to hear if that works for you.

Sascha,
its nice idea but it wont work. For planning macro, its the same thing i.e. running it thru CAC, Event Studio, & creating jobs.
even if you provide read/exec/trav rights on macro/event/job on cognos portal and it doesnt have proper credentials to run contributor macro, it wont run. all steps you mentioned, they are part of setting up event studio job.

least to mention, i did try several options but still no luck. the moment i add him to Planning Admin rights, it works.
Cognos has already given up on this, per cognos, users need to be added to Planning Admin Rights.
I dont want to believe this and thats the reason i am out for some creative ideas like yours.

adityashah, I am going to try this again as soon as I find some time because I am sure I did simulate it successfully on my VM. I used the sysadmin for setting up CAC macro and Connection security but used a complete downstripped user to successfully run the macro, even if I got a problem of showing the correct macro name (it said 'Not avail.' or something like this).
