Analysis Studio vs. Report Studio

Greetings: We are currently deciding whether or not we need the Analysis Studio. From what I've learned, Analysis Studio is designed for multidimensional analysis. Hence, the Studio can only work with multidimensional data. Since we currently do not have such packages/data setup, our Analysis Studio only contains the Cognos sample packages (i.e, GO data warehouse).

If we only have an operational data store and a transactional DB at our place, is it event necessary for us to purchase the Analysis Studio? What does Analysis Studio provide that Report Studio does not? When I look at the interface, to me, it seems that Report Studio can accomplish the same thing (crosstabs, etc.)

Could you please provide your experience with this tool and how it has helped you?

Thanks.

You are correct, in that Analysis Studio is used only with Dimensionally Modeled or OLAP sources.  If you have none, then AS would not be needed.

Report Studio is more geared to Professional Report Authoring and can provide Analysis-like reports, similar to an Analysis Studio report.  Even if you do have OLAP or DMR, I would argue that Report Studio is still all you would need in general.

if you dont have a dimensional  package there is no use of analysis studio

AS is a tool for users that like pivot tables. Very good is the new cafe (Cognos AddIn for Excel). You can easily create our reports directly in excel. This has been a giant stept for our excel-power-users, as they don't have to switch from Excel and log into a webbased software.

As the name implies, Analysis Studio is meant for analytical purposes.

Sure, you can achieve the same thing by using Report Studio, however, the efficiency of drilling up and down, swapping rows and columns, nested crosstab etc, it cant beat Analysis Studio

Not to mention, if you have OLAP cube, you wont be hitting the Databases, thus performance wise, it's faster.

However, for display and user graphic, hands down to Report Studio.

And again, as the name implies, Report Studio is meant for reporting. Creating reports in business formats is not something Analysis Studio can do.
