Hello all,

I am having a problem with Cognos installing and running properly on my computer.  The first time it installed I could see cognos in office, excel, and powerpoint.  My company uses Carbon Black and after starting it blocked something with Cognos and now i dont see it in my any of the office components.  Our security group says its not being blocked anymore, but I don't know where to go from here.  I have installed/uninstalled Cognos 12.2.2 over 10 times and even uninstalled/reinstalled Office 2016 several times with no success.  Any suggestions on what I can check?

Hi,

A quick sanity check. Are you installing the 32-bit version of Cognos for MS Office, or the 64-bit version? What about your MS Office install - is it the 32-bit install or the 64-bit install? It's important that these things line up - eg the 32-bit Cognos for MS Office won't work with the 64-bit version of MS office, and vice versa.

Cheers!

Good morning.  The assistance is much appreciated.  To answer your question, I just confirmed the MS Office install I have is MS Office 2016 Standard 64 bit.  The Cognos version I am installing is 64 bit as well.  Are there any log files to view in order to see any errors?  Also, do you normally show Cognos installed in the add/remove programs in Windows?  It does not show any Cognos applications installed.  Although this might be normal, I just wanted to verify.  Any thing else you can suggest I check to find the issue?

MS Office 2016? What version of Cognos for MS Office do you have? You mentioned 12.2.2 in your original post, but there isn't a Cognos 12 version (yet). Do you mean 10.2.2? If so, have you installed Cognos for MS Office 10.2.2 Interim Fix 1? https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/cognos-microsoft-office-1022-interim-fix-1

Cheers!

MFGF, you are correct on the Cognos version 10.2.2.  I must have fat fingered it.  I used the link you provided below and downloaded the MS Office 10.2.2 Interim Fix 1.  I followed the directions, uninstalled the version I have on my system, and installed the fix version.  After it was complete I went to the installed logs and found only this error:

-
Error: Failed system command "C:\WINDOWS\system32\regsvr32.exe /s "C:\Program Files\ibm\cognos\Cognos for Microsoft Office\CognosOfficeShim.dll" ".
Error: Application has returned exit code "3".
-

Would this explain why I do not see the Cognos link in my Office products?  If that's the case, what would cause that to fail and how can I fix this issue?

Thanks again for your help!  I think this may be the problem.

Sounds like that's at least one step forward. When you fired up the installer, did you use the "Run as Administrator" option? I don't know what exit code 3 means, but it's something you could take to IBM Support if you can't get past the issue yourself.

Cheers!

MFGF,

I found out a little more about that error.  The version of Cognos in both my previous 10.2.2 and the version link you provided to me are only for 64 bit windows and 2007 (I believe) and up installations of Office.  The file CognosOfficeShim.dll is only for older versions than 2007 so its not included in the package.  The file CognosOfficeShim12.dll is the correct file for the newer versions.  Im guess they left that in the install script even though the CognosOfficeShim.dll file is not in the install package so it fails.

Outside of that there were no errors so I'm still dead in the water.  Do you have any ideas why Cognos will not show up in my office products?

Thanks again.
