I have a Date prompt on a prompt page and the format of the date is changing from Apr 28, 2008 to 28 Apr 2008 in a haphazard way. I can open the same report twice in the space of minutes and I never know which format will appear. This makes it impossible to select a month and year for my filter. I'm desperate. Using Cognos 8.3

You may want to try setting the bound column's Date Format to the desired format.  This would be done in the Framework Model.

Thanks for your reply.
However there is no bound column. This is just picking up the gregorian calendar and allowing users to select a date from the calendar. There is no connection with data in the database.

No bound column??  What are you doing with the parameter set by this prompt... I would assume some sort of filtering?

If my assumption is correct, the query item you are filtering on would be where I am suggesting you format.

If not, what is this parameter being used for??!?!?!?

I am using the date to do various comparisons and to create column headings in a list. However my problem is occurring while still on the prompt page. I have the date prompt set to edit box so that it displays today's date as soon as the page is displayed. Sometimes it shows 01 May 2008 and sometimes it shows May 01, 2008. This can happen on a single report on consecutive runs or on different reports. I have 11 reports using similar but not identical prompt pages and they all do it but I can't find a pattern.
