We currently have 11.0.12 installed and working but 11.1 is coming out this Wednesday.  Will this require a completely new installation or can it be used to overwrite the files installed with 11.0.12?

Though it will be known only after it is released but none of the previous versions have ever been made to overwrite the existing installation if the version installed is different than the one you are installing.

It should always be installed in a separate location and then the contents from the existing version should be migrated to the new version.

Hi,

This Wednesday? I heard something rather different. I was told the on-prem version (and single-tenant SAAS) worldwide would be released later in Q4 (IBM use calendar quarters). I think there is a multi-tenant SAAS version out already in the USA, but without the ability to connect to on-prem data sources or authentication providers.

My understanding is that if you want to replace 11.0.12 with 11.1 (when it gets released) it will be an over-the-top install, just as it is with all versions of Cognos Analytics. Alternatively if you want both versions running side by side, then obviously install 11.1 in a different location (and use different port numbers and a different content store database).

Cheers!

MF.

I guess it was only released at 9AM this morning to those attending some conference or training in Miami.  A Cognos support tech said they have not been given a date when it will be released to everyone.

I hope they improve the interface for making the reports.

I have seen 11.1, and there are some really good improvements in the report authoring interface :)

I've had the pleasure to be invited to the early access program with PMsquare and the interface is significantly improved.

I wrote an article about most of the changes in Report Studio, but a few highlights.

Navigation drop down. You can quickly and easily go to any page or query or explorer window with two clicks. The left side is now only insertable objects.
That stupid right click popover menu can be pinned to the top of the screen.
You can search your model for specific fields!
Autoplacement. Meh, I can live without it.
The super-secret cheat code to open the menu bar no longer works. This sucks and I've complained bitterly about it to the dev team.
Lock icon is now on the page.
Most of the items from the menu bar can be found in other locations in the report, so it's not too bad.
There's a nifty style painter that let's you save styles. If you use it to style a list you can style all the segments of the list, like rows, headers, total rows.
There's another new charting engine. (How many are we up to? 6?). In interactive mode you can filter the charts locally. Without refreshing the screen. The charts are also now responsive, so they can expand and shrink with the size of the screen.

The biggest issue I have with the 11.1 release is the option to disable extended data items is extremely well hidden. I've opened an RFE asking them to add it back in: https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/rfe/execute?use_case=viewRfe&CR_ID=125416. Everyone should vote on this.
