Hi, can we have a new Child Board for JavaScript and move all the javascript posts to there? Will make it easier for the JavaScript guys. ;)

I don't use it and hate it with a passion (I have even threatened to sack people who use it in the past just because of possible pain going forward on upgrades - there seems to be issues now in C11? ) because I inherit some absolute rubbish people have created when they could have better designed the solution without it  but understand why my clients use it.   Mainly around prompts and very basic stuff so they have less options to click. I have seen some  clients using in portals which embed security and call other reports based on AD security... Oh boy they will have fun when they upgrade to c11 (if they decide they want to keep cognos) as their whole 15 server multidispatcher environment is based around portal tabs and javascript... They will hate the look and feel of the new version especially when they have spent hundreds of thousands $$$ on developing the portal tabs in c10.

Many years ago we have issues on an 8.3 upgrade when JavaScript stopped working and I remember those support calls with Cognos and my management at the time. A brilliant get out clause from Cognos. "Sorry JavaScript is not supported". It took us ages to fix and eventually we ripped it all out and disabled the javascript (and embedded SQL option) ..  I believe this is still the response about using JavaScript from IBM.   It will work but they wont unpick your code.

If you have javascript in reports  and no good java/code developers on site then good luck.

This is no longer 100% true. As of 10.2 IBM officially supports the Prompt API. It's a step in the right direction.

This is actually one of the reasons I've been pushing my RFE so much. IBM (or a third party) could release (or sell) extensions that they could then support. It would provide the often requested features without any required knowledge on the developer's part.

Hi Paul,
Is there any particular pdf or url link that provides cognos javascript API to learn. Since, cognos 11.1 I am hearing IBM is suggesting to make report in interactive mode. Is a general Javascript would be enough to code custom controls and page modules going forward. Appreciate your help.

Thanks & Regards
