Hi there,

unfortunately, I have no web skills whatsover (been putting that on my list of things to learn, but there's too much on there :)). I've seen some posts styling report elements via CSS, with the benefit that such changes both work for report consumption on both browser and mobile app. Maybe that could help here.

I need a button bar to be scrollable, as I can't sacrifice the report real estate to display all buttons. Easy enough, right? just stick it into a block, give the block a fixed size, and check one of the two "use scrollbars" options. It *works*, but the scrollbars aren't pretty sights.

Is it possible to style the blocks so that they do scroll larger contents, but do not display the scrollbar? If so, how do I do that?

You won't have a simple solution for this one, unfortunately.

Custom scrollbars driven by CSS are not supported by some popular browsers such as IE and FF. Often times it's done using jQuery (Javascript), which wouldn't be feasible in your situation.

Are you designing a dashboard? Perhaps there's another design approach which would work, but I'd need an understanding/visual of the overall layout. I sometimes use repeater tables instead as I'm not a fan of the lack of customization ability in button bars.

Yes, indeed I'm designing a dashboard. As the controls currently have live data in there, I rather attached a mockup made in excel :)

The two "total" elements sitting at the top are button bars with a single button each. The three elements below that are data button bars with direction vertical, each sitting inside their own sized block.

If their query returns up to 4 elements, all is fine, but if their query returns more than 4, the data button bar grows too large for the respective block. The block turns on the scrollbars, which sit as gray bars to the right of the button bars, messing up my whole layout. :(

This will be a two post reply, as I'm restricted to one attachment per post. Take a look at the example I attached, specifically the left column where I've added interactive controls.

"Launch ABC Filters" was a sample I created for when you need cascading prompts and a great amount of horizontal space. Since we can't fit it neatly into the dashboard design, I created a popup window (next post's attachment) where you can interact with the filters.

Just a thought, but perhaps you could move the filters to a popup and give yourself extra control.

Please see the second attachment, where the popup contains filters.

That is an awesome technique - does it work on active reports both in browser and in the mobile app?

hespora

also, what happens to the main window "below" the popup when you make selections? Does it try and update right away, or only when you commit via the "save & close" button?

An alternative is to upload the images to a site like imgbb and include the IMG tags (bbcode) for the images in a single post :)

I'm not sure about mobile, you'll have to test that out. It updates the visualizations right away, which could be neat if you include chart animation.

Download the samples and look for the Popup example. It includes report specs for the Cognos samples.
