Hi,

Does anyone know if there's a limit to the size of an email attachment that can be sent from Cognos? My Spanish colleagues have a requirement (don't ask!) to send tens of thousands of rows in a CSV file to one of their suppliers. The report has been working in the past with attachments around the 8Mb mark. The attachment is now in the order of 37Mb (I know, I know...) and whilst it appears to run and be sent from Cognos, it's not being received in Spain.

The techy guys have looked at the email server and can't find anything wrong...I'm scratching my head as to why it's not getting there. Does anyone know if there are any govenors / limiters in Cognos that would prevent a large file from being emailed?

Cheers,
Chris

Hi Chris,

I'm fairly confident this isn't a Cognos limitation. All you can do in Cognos is to specify the email server and port and the credentials to connect - there are no other settings for emailing that I am aware of. If you simply run and save the report output, does it complete? If so, this rules out any governors at the Cognos end of things.

I'd be willing to bet the email server has an attachment file size limit configured - most do.

Cheers!

MF.

The temptation to say that I know nothing and that I come from Barcelona is almost too much!

To answer the question, yes the report runs and produces the attachment...the run history even suggests that the email has been sent. But the attachment on the email is empty when it gets to the email server. I didn't think it would be Cognos, but I thought it was worth asking the question.

Thanks for the help - I'll keep digging and if I find anything useful I'll post it here (I'm not holding my breath)

Hi Chris,

Trying going to Admin -> Configuration -> Dispatcher & Services -> [your dispatcher(s)] and 'Set Properties' on the Delivery Service and the Batch Report Service. There's a setting for maximum MB for files sent by e-mail that you could check.

I believe if the attachment is rejected by the mail server for being too large, Cognos should be receiving an error message. My guess is that you're exceeding the setting on the service in Cognos.
