Unable to use custom sizing with prompts

Cognos Analytics 11.0.4, Red Hat Linux, Reports
I am using Full interactive mode.

The report has several prompts, some check box, some radio, some drop down list.
I want to set the properties such as width, height, font, background colour, etc.

None of these properties have any effect on the prompt object format - dimensions, colour, font - are all out of my control.
If I turn of FIM the properties DO have an impact but the old style rendering looks ugly.

Any ideas A) why FIM causes this problem and B) is there are way around this?
