Setting Data Item as Geographic Location in FM

Is it possible to change the properties of a data item in FM to represent a geographic location like you can do when creating a data module in Cognos Analytics?  It seems like there is better flexibility when importing data via Excel, versus using a package that was modeled in FM.  For example, I have some lats and longs that I'm wanting to plot utilizing JavaScript.  Using the same exact JavaScript, I can get my imported data (from the package) to plot points because the lat and long are designated as geographic locations, but I can't get my package to do so since they're not designated as such in the FM.  Am I overlooking something obvious?  It seems as though you would want more flexibility from the FM side instead of the import side.
