Having issues with scheduled emails, the following error is received, there is no FW rule in place and the exchange team claim there is nothing stopping the Cognos using the exchange server which is the case most of the time but from time to time the error is received.

26 April 2016 08:09:50    CNC-SDS-0408 There are email messages waiting to be sent.
26 April 2016 08:09:50    CNC-SDS-0410 The email message was not sent. Approximate message size: [31 KB] The Mail server returned this error: [Can't send command to SMTP host]
26 April 2016 08:09:50    CNC-SDS-0335 Error returned from SMTP Server. The error message was: [Can't send command to SMTP host]. The message could not be sent.
26 April 2016 08:09:50    CNC-SDS-0335 Error returned from SMTP Server. The error message was: [Software caused connection abort: socket write error]. The message could not be sent.
26 April 2016 09:09:58    CNC-SDS-0409 The email messages were sent to 1 recipients.

Can anyone help? I've gone over pretty much any post out there in regards to SMTP troubleshooting...

Thanks!
The quieter you become, the more you can hear

It appears to be making an actual connection. Have they looked at the Exchange logs?

If you have remote access and a telnet client on the Cognos server - or can work with someone who does - it is fairly easy to test using SMTP commands. That would probably be my next step.
