Hi Folks,

We are going to upgrade from Cognos 8.4 to new Cognos 10.2.2 environment on windows server 2012.

we are planning to take content store backup from cognos 8.4 and restore it into new 10.2.1 environment and then we are planning to assign same security(Authentication provider) to Cognos10.2.2 as well.

In this case will Cognos carry's all Folders security and report security(permissions) from 8.4 to new 10.2.2 environment or should I need to reassign all permissions again? Please clarify.

And also what are the things i should keep in mind before initiating this migration.is there any document which describes cognos10.2.2 installation on windows server 2012.if have anything such could you please share with us.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

If you use the same security provider, configured with the same name, and you restore the original content store into your new instance, then your security should remain exactly as it was - no need to re-assign permissions etc.

There are some big differences between Cognos 8 and Cognos 10 - so getting the same instance working in Cognos 10 will be just the first step. You then have things like a new charting engine, visualizations, multi-tenancy, Dynamic Query Mode, Dynamic Cubes, Cognos Workspace, Cognos Workspace Advanced etc to evaluate and implement if desired. Installing is the easy part. I'd recommend you use Lifecycle Manager to test and compare your content in both instances (8.4 and 10.2.2) and make sure that all reports run and return exactly the same results.
The install is described really well in the Installation and Configuration Guide, so take a look at this before and during the install. Also bear in mind that Cognos 10.2.2 provides license rights to download and use DB2 as a content store, so you might want to evaluate whether DB2 is an option you wish to utilise?

Cheers!

Hi MFGF,

Thanks for prompt response. It is a great input from your side.Surely I will check all those things. However we are doing it as a pilot project if everything goes smoothly then we will use all new cognos features.

Thanks a lot once again.
