Hello Friends,

I am working on Cognos BI. I want to change my skills to Bigdata/Hadoop. Can someone give your suggestions if you aware or someone have any experience and which one is good for BI resource.

Thanks,

BigChris

That sounds like you want careers advice rather than something about Report Studio...?

Thanks,

The two are not mutually exclusive - there are some good opportunities for reporting over Big Data :) Why Hadoop specifically? It's something of a one-trick pony - you can choose from Map Reduce, Map Reduce or Map Reduce. Maybe you should consider something more modern and flexible like Spark? IBM seems to be putting a lot of effort into supporting and nurturing it - might be a good choice if it's going to become big (no pun intended) ;)

Cheers!

Thanks for Your suggestions MF.

Is it required Java experience to learn Spark/Hadoop? Y i want to change because of learn something which is newly and that's related to Data warehousing(ETL/Cognos/SQL) like this. Since one year iam searching on cognos and i dont get much calls/requirement so considering to survive in software i want to update new skills. Please suggest me to choose.

What can I tell you? I make a good living from my Cognos skills, and there seems to be some demand too. if you want to branch out, then some of the newer technologies might be worthwhile investigating. I'd personally be looking at Spark if I wanted a new challenge, but only you know your skills, technical savvy and preferences, so it's not really possible to say what you *ought* to do - just to throw ideas your way for you to investigate.

Cognos does have demand and resources are available too but as one of my friends said once - There is a lot of difference between good people and lot of people so even if lot of people are available in the market, they would have less chances on finding a job unless they happen to know some recruiter who can place them in some company with whom they have an 'arrangement' ( yes, it does work like that too  >:( ).  Learning a new technology would increase the chances of finding a job as there won't be many resources available but then there won't be too many jobs available either as the technology is newer and not many companies are using it . I guess it works both ways.

I am usually involved on contractor and employee selection teams in my current position. I can verify that there are a fair number of people who know various Cognos studios (content authoring), less so for modeling or administration. Sadly in both cases a lot of them are not really very good, which comes out in an interview, or they may not have current experience. If you are good at Cognos but not finding work, it may be your networking or perhaps how you present yourself that needs some attention.

Cognos is still one of a few big players in enterprise BI, in my opinion, and I do not see it disappearing anytime soon. Of course, I could be wrong, too.  :P

Nope, you are not wrong at all ! Cognos, in fact, is one of biggest players in the BI world and the demand is increasing, at least in US. It's the availability of good resources that's the problem. It's good in one way and bad in another way. The customer not having proper resources opens the door for consulting companies but then finding resources to get the job done becomes a problem for such companies.

Thanks Guys for your participation and giving suggestions.

I could see very less opportunities in india on cognos so it seems companies are using  different reporting platforms/using open source technologies so i decided to change the technology. Since 1 year iam searching but very less opportunities and offcourse i got good opportunity but going forward i dont think so there is a demand for cognos.

Thanks,
