Hi All,

we have some requirements for which the data will be collected through Sharepoint DB. My question is if we can access sharepoint db through FM to create the model? i have looked online and all i found was how to save reports to sharepoints  and such but nothing on how to access Sharepoint DB.

If this isn't possible, can you please suggest any other way we can achieve this.

I originally recommend that that they use Sharepoint  as front end application to collect the data but store it in SQL db, Teradata or even Access DB.

Thank you all!

Hi,

What exactly do you mean by "SharePoint DB"? Do you mean the content repository SharePoint stores its content in? If so, I believe this is just a SQL Server database. It's unclear to me what data you'd need from this, though - which of SharePoint's metadata would you need for reporting purposes?

Thanks MFGF for the response.

What we're trying to achieve is use sharepoint as a front end application to collect certain type of data and store it in Sharepoint DB\repository. Right now this process is manual where people are storing and updating data manually in excel spreadsheets and sharing those across the company and we're trying to automate this process so everyone can have single point of data entry and is kept in a standardized format so we can access it through FM to build reports off of it.

Im not too familiar with sharepoint and how exactly it works. i'm thinking sharepoint has its own db, or it utilizes the Access DB. I do have a meeting with  the sharepoint team later today and will ask if they'll store this data in repository or the db.

I will go out on a limb and suggest they are storing it an a SharePoint list. This can be exposed as XML, which you can ask your SharePoint team about doing.

XML does appear to be a supported data source in Cognos. I've never done that myself, so I cannot provide details but at least it is something you can look at. I think that is probably going to be your best bet.

Do not take the approach of hitting the SharePoint content database directly. It's largely undocumented, not supported, and likely to change.
