Format issues with scheduled reports?

Hi All,

Does anyone else have issues with formatting report scheduling emails in Cognos? Im using Internet explorer 8.0.7601.17514 (as Cognos does not seem to be fully compatible with my versions of FireFox and Chrome) and experience the following issues:

  • Email editor crashes - when applying formatting within the email editor it often causes my Internet Explorer to crash
  • Spacing issues - when copying formatted text from MS Word into the email editor, the spacing in the end result email is often bigger than what is visible in the email editor, causing the email to look unprofessional
  • Text repeating - when pasting formatted text from MS Word into the email editor and making adjustments to the text / format, it often causes the output in the email to duplicate sections of the email for no apparent reason

Anyone else experiencing this? Anyone know how to mitigate against these issues?

Thanks

MFGF

Hi,

What version of Cognos 10 are you using? Different versions support different browser releases. You can go to the page below, pick your version of Cognos 10, and see a report of what is supported in that environment (including browsers and versions).

Thanks for the response. We are on 10.2.1. The link sent to me goes to generate a report for 10.2.1 software requirements but fails so can't view this information.

I am however surprised that I can't get 10.2.1 to work on one of the following Internet browsers correctly:

  • IE 8.0.7601.17514
  • Chrome 41.0.2272.101 m
  • FireFox (Mozilla) 32.0.1

As well as obtaining a solution, I was keen to understand if anyone else had experienced this issue. Upgrading browser versions can be a bit of a pain...

Hi. Are you trying to generate the report in IE8? Try it in Firefox - it usually works for me :)

Here's a screen capture of the list of supported browsers for 10.2.1:

Looks like IE8 ought to be OK. Firefox needs to be an ESR build, though.

Here are the notes when you click on the IE8 "View" link in the Details column:

Granted, MFGF shows it should work. Still, IE8 is seriously old. Effective in Jan 2016, it will be unsupported by Microsoft. In fact, you will pretty much need to move to IE11 for non-servers at that time. You should be looking at some kind of upgrade plan now.

See http://blogs.msdn.com/b/ie/archive/2014/08/07/stay-up-to-date-with-internet-explorer.aspx for more information on Microsoft's plans for IE.

Personally I use the latest mainstream version Firefox, and it works just fine. I also have IE10 in compatibility mode, and though I do not use it as much I have not had problems with it either. I know some of our users are using IE11 as well. Chrome seems to work alright for consuming content, authoring not so well.

I was using IE9 until recently, but I found that Active Reports built in Cognos 10.2.2 were *horribly* laggy. I updated to IE11 and the difference was astonishing - active reports suddenly started working as desired.

Thanks guys. My company's IT department are always reluctant to move away from stable versions of software but looks like they will be pushed from IE8 soon!

Thanks everyone for your responses.

I use the ESR version of Firefox. I tend to find I get a lot less issues with this than any other browsers. Might be worth giving it a go.
