We currently have cognos BI 10.2.1 installed on a windows 2008 R 2 standard 64 bit virtual server.  This server also has cognos datamanager 10.2.1 and cognos framework manager 10.2.1 and the dw is stored in sql 2008 R2.  The server has an Intel Xeon CPU E7-2860 processor @ 2.27ghz and 2.26 ghz, so 2 processors.  32 GB of RAM.  We have about 100 users.  Only about 20 are real active users.  The others are in and out of the system weekly.  In order to reduce the pvu for cognos renewal purposes cost on the server we will be removing one processor.  Wondering if anyone else has done something similar and what affect this had on the end users in terms of performance.  Thanks in advance for any comments!

CPU utilization can vary wildly depending on your data sources, query subjects, reports, how many simultaneous report requests you receive, package types, etc. If you (or people in your organization) have access to server stats, you can probably determine whether the 2nd CPU has really been used or not.

We have used single-core servers for development purposes. It works, but there are generally only a few people using it at most throughout the day and then usually not simultaneously. I am not a big fan of single cores on a server, but I fully understand your monetary rationale. I like Cognos, but it is not inexpensive.

If nothing else, it is easy enough to add/remove CPUs from a virtual server. Why not give it a try and see if anybody complains? :D
