Report Studio Stuck at Initializing Screen

Hello folks. I'm a cognovice and having some issues with report studio.

Report studio was working fine for me. However, I logged in as Cognos Test user on my laptop and tested report studio which didn't work and when I logged off Cognos Test and logged in as me I am also not able to get into the report studio since then. But when I tried on my desktop I was able to access to report studio. Does this suggest something to do with user profiles not refreshing or something on that lines?

What I mean by not accessing the report studio is the report studio popup is stuck on the progress bar forever. We have tried all the ie9 settings like clearing the cache, adding to trusted sites, all the security bits in the browser are fine and literally everything we can do in ie9 but still having this issue.

Any more ideas from you expert folks?

TIA

CognosPaul

Problems like this are hard to hard to troubleshoot as there are thousands of possible reasons, ranging from the browser security to network communications issues to user permissions.

You've posted this under the ReportNet board. Are you really working on ReportNet or a different version?

If you're on 10, can you try opening RS from Firefox?

What happens if you browse directly to http://<server>/cognos8/pat/ ? Or http://<server>/cognos8/pat/rsapp.htm?

Do you have any extensions or addons installed on IE9? What happens if you run IE without addons? iexplore –extoff

First of all thanks for your quick response.

Apologies if have posted in the wrong board. Can this be moved to the appropriate report studio board?

We're on cognos version 10.1. Tried on Firefox but the same issue.

Tried "http://<server>/<mappeddirectory>/pat/rsapp.htm" but the same issue.

Tried ie9 without addons but the same issue again. Also tried resetting the ie on the advanced tab and again the same issue.

I'm just trying to understand what has changed on my laptop when I logged in as a Cognos Test user (for which report studio is not working) and logging back as me (report studio was working fine) for the report studio to be broken for me as well?

Appreciate your help.

If it's not working in Firefox, then it's likely unrelated to browser settings.

How old is the laptop? Does it have a decent amount of available ram? Are there any running applications that may be blocking files or elements on webpages?

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P8700 @ 2.53GHz, 2534 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 2 Logical Processor(s)
RAM: 4GB

Just to mention again that report studio was working fine until I logged in as this "Cognos Test" user and then logged back as me.

I didn't see any suspicious applications or processes blocking files or http requests.

Since RS isn't opening in Firefox, I'd expect to be more of a systems issue. Browsers don't usually share settings.

Just a sanity check, when you cleared the history in IE, you unchecked the "Preserve Favorites website data"?

Is there anything in the logs of the gateway you're using?

When you say you logged in as Cognos Test, do you mean you logged into the laptop as the Cognos Test, or into Cognos?

If it was a permissions issue in Cognos, then you should get a notice saying that you don't have permission to open it. Opening the link directly should cause RS to load, then immediately shut down. Since it's not even getting there, it sounds like it's choking on one of the XML files in the /pat/ directory.

Can you open Business Insight Advanced?

1. Yes I have unchecked "Preserve Favorites website data".
2. We haven't checked the logs yet to see for any specific issues. Are there any specific things we need to look for?
3. Cognos Test is a test user we have created for testing this issue. So I logged into my laptop as this Cognos Test user.
4. Do we need to check for any permissions to the /pat directory
5. No can't open Business Insight Advanced. It's stuck forever on the green progress bar.

We have also noticed with other users that if they use the FQDN they have the same issue. But using just the server name, they are able to open the report studio normally.

So to summarise the issues so far:

1. For some users, RS working fine if using just the <servername> and RS not working if using FQDN.
2. For some users, RS not working at all.
3. For me RS not working at all on my laptop, but working on my desktop if using just the <servername> and fails if I use the FQDN.
4. Just found out that Business Insight Advanced is also not working but not too bothered at the moment because the priority is for RS.

Update: I used fiddler and looked at the request /ibmcognos/pat/rsapp.htm while launching RS and I got a "401 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to invalid credential" http response. This is when I use FQDN.

Don't bother checking the Cognos logs. It's a problem with the authentication between Cognos and the gateway.

Are you using IIS? I'm wondering if it's the double hop problem.

Thanks Paul for your help. I read the links you have posted and I understand where you're coming from. That's a very valid point. I shall pass it on to our more technical team to take a look. We are also escalating this issue to IBM via our business partner. I appreciate your help and quick responses. Shall post what the problem was when its fixed.

The issue has been sorted out now. The problem was with the resources.xml and templates.xml files under <cognos installation path>\webcontent\pat\res. We were trying to customise the templates and made some mistakes nesting the customised xml and hence the problem.

Initially we had to rebuild cognos bi unable to solve this problem but recently we were trying to customise the templates again and did the same mistake causing the same problem again but this time we were quick to nail down the issue. What a silly thing !

This is one place to look for if any of you having similar issues.

Same issue as Coggie.  Bad job of editing the rescources.xml and templates.xml file by me caused the studios to hang at launch.  A review of this thread and a scan of the affected files turned up the problem.  A simple fix to a problem that was causing me to loose what little hair I have left.

Thanks!
