So i wanted to see where i stand in terms of fix packs / fixes /updates e.t.c

I am currently in 10.2.1 FP3..

Step 1:

I go to download the licensed programs and i see that i have option to download around 12GB for version 10.2.1.

Question 1: I wonder if this is the 10.2.1 i downloaded some months ago or if this download includes the latest FP5.

Step 2:

I go to fix central to see what is the latest FP and IF..

And here it is what i get: See attachment

If i select 10.2.1 then the latest is FP5 (6/11/2014) Pretty lucky i was , today was the day.

If i select 10.2.1.2 i get the latest as an interim fix dated june 2014..

Can someone for the last time explain to me what is the logic behind all these?

At a certain point of time if i want to start fro scratch what i do?

Download the media and the latest FP? or just the media?  :-\

Yep - I completely concur. It's all rather befuddling. :)

Here's my understanding (not anything official, just what I have deduced)

The download you get from the Passport Advantage site (licensed downloads) is the GA version of 10.2.1 (GA = General Availability) and is unpatched. It is the original version. It doesn't change.

If you download 10.2.1 fix pack 3, 4 or 5 from Fixcentral, you can install these straight on top of the GA install and get all fixes in one hit. FP3 includes FP1, FP2 and all the interim fixes for these. FP4 includes FP3. FP5 includes FP4. That's the good news. Just grab FP5 and install it over what you have, and you will be entirely up to date and all will be well.

In the earlier fix pack and interim fix releases, things got a little out of sync. Fix packs 1 and 2 and their respective interim fixes are cumulative, ie you would need to install FP1, then the interim fixes for FP1 in the right order, then FP2, then the interim fixes for FP2 in the right order to get things working properly. So before FP3 came along you would have had a big install marathon to get up to date fixes - FP1 to get to 10.2.1.1, then all the interim fixes for 10.2.1.1 in order, then FP2 to get to 10.2.1.2, then all the interim fixes for 10.2.1.2 in order. It was all resolved when FP3 was released, though. This contained everything prior from FP1, FP2 and all of their interim fixes. The good news now is that you can ignore all of this and just grab FP5.

So, to summarise, if ever you want to start from scratch, download the 10.2.1 GA install from your licensed programs area, download 10.2.1 FP5 from fixcentral, and you will have all you need.

Cheers!

you save lives mister !! although i could wait for your response and waited on the 13GB download...Now i will have to erase around 10 of them :)

So get the bases 10.2.1 and install the FP5 over them.

Also get the CAFE and mobile separately for base and FP...

Since we are talking about versioning..

What is this?
Cognos 10.2.2 ....Is it released? Is this the FP5?

http://www.performanceg2.com/blog/whats-new-ibm-cognos-10-2-2/?goback=%2Egde_2293305_member_5936243676953980931

Nope. It's imminent, but not yet released. Not long to wait now, though. It's the next major release after 10.2.1 (ie not a fix pack or interim fix). FP5 is a fix pack for 10.2.1 but this is the next major release of Cognos 10.

There is a cloud-based instance of 10.2.2 up on Analyticszone (http://www.analyticszone.com) that you can try out right now. It has a number of updates and new innovations over 10.2.1 :)

Cheers!

If you test your content and all is well, I see no reason to wait for a fix pack. On the other hand, if you encounter an issue during testing that would make things difficult, then it would be wise to wait until that issue is resolved.

In the end it all hinges on how comfortable you are with 10.2.2. If it seems stable and robust, and if you trust IBM, go for it. If not, don't. :)
