Minimal service components enabled for Content Manager only install

Working with a distributed environment which has separate Gateway/App Tier/Content machines.

With regards specifically to the Content Manager only install, there are service components listed under "Environment > IBM Cognos services" that also exist within the App Tier only installation options (App Tier has all listed service components enabled). This coupled with an issue in which reports containing images which were emailed out failed to include the image data, which was due to both the Delivery and Job services being enabled on the CM. These findings lead to me to believe that all services on the CM install should be set to False with the exception of "Content Manager service".

This seemed to work in that services started, reports execute as expected both interactive and background, however I noticed today that Content Admin Export jobs no longer execute properly, they sit in a "pending" state.

I've found a couple documents which in my opinion either contradict the description displayed within Cognos Configuration or don't pertain directly to Cognos BI.

- this article states to "Dispatcher service enabled? = true", however Cognos Configuration states the following within the description of the Dispatcher service "By default these services are disabled on computers where Content Manager is the only component that is installed."

- this article is from PowerPlay documentation, I have been unable to find the equivalent within the BI Install and Config guide.

My question to the experts, what is the minimal service components needed on a single Content Manager install within a distributed environment, in order to provide 100% functionality?

Hi,

cognos content database service should be started.
and also your database service should be as started and your content mgr should point to appln server.

As per my understanding below services are enough on content manager server.

Content Manager cache service
Content Manager Service
Event Service
Log Service
Monitor Service
system Service
Thanks

Thanks for the reply Saumil.

Unfortunately your recommendations do not apply to the issue though.  This install is not using the IBM Content Database, a MS SQL Server DB is used.  The Content Store connection is successful, as indicated, services start fine and the Cognos service is usable with the exception of Content Administration tasks.

When you say "content mgr should point to appln server", do you mean the CM should point to an Application Tier server in the "Dispatcher URI for external applications" property?  If so, this is configured.

As this install only has "Content Manager" software installed the following services which you had listed do not exist (see image attached to original post).
-Content Manager cache service
-Log Service
-System Service

I will attempt with the three that do exists though.
-Content Manager service
-Event Management service
-Monitor service

Thanks again.

So far so good, I cannot find any issues with only the following enabled on the Content Manager.
-Content Manager service
-Event Management service
-Monitor service

Thanks all for your help.

Hey, according to a technote we found while looking into this for our new 10.2.1 environment it differs slightly from v8 to v10:

In Cognos 8.3 and 8.4, a Content Manager only instance requires:
-Content Manager Service
-Event Service
-Monitor Service

In Cognos 8.4.1, a Content Manager only instance requires:
-Content Manager Service
-Monitor Service

In Cognos 10.1.x, 10.2, a Content Manager only instance requires:
-Content Manager Service
-Monitor Service
