Challenges on FM and Power Cube Transformers

Hi Gurus,

In our project we need to implement Cubes using transformers on Cognos 10.2.1 ,my question is regarding challenges faced by the respected members of this forum when using Powerplay cube transformers as datasource in Framework manager,Is it true that .mdc files are not editable in Framework manager ..Also If you can list all the challenges faced during Power play cube implementation on Framework manager.

Hi,

Can you elaborate on what you are asking for here? You mention challenges, but there is no context specified as to what kinds of challenges you mean. Are you referring to challenges in learning? Challenges in technology? Challenges in environment? Challenges in development? Challenges in maintenance? There could be a million answers to this depending on a person's current experience, skillset, location, employer, data, requirements, business pains to address etc.

To address a couple of things you were specific about here:

1. PowerCubes are created and maintained in Transformer, not in Framework Manager.
2. Once a cube has been built using Transformer, you can add it as a data source in Cognos 10 BI - you don't need to use Framework Manager for this, but you can if you wish.
3. If you do "import" the cube into Framework Manager, it is just a pointer to the cube, you don't see the metadata and you can't edit it in Framework Manager (just like any other OLAP cube). You would do this simply as a means of including the cube in a package.

Precisely, I am looking answers to below questions now,I will really be grateful if any of respected members of the forum can provide some light on this

1)How to implement data/object level security on transformer cube
2)How to apply multilingual feature on cube
3)If we create cube based on Cognos package/report, can the security applied on them will automatically apply on cube also?
4)Similarly,If we create cube based on multilingual feature on cube, can the security applied on them will automatically apply on cube also? and my last question
5)if we create cube directly from database (oracle),and publish it through Transformer How to apply multilingual feature and data/object based security

I am unable to find answers of above questions, would appreciate if anyone can explain the answers of above queries

3. No. Security from Framework Manager is not automatically applied when FM packages are used as data sources for Transformer. FM security is row and column based (ie relational) whereas security in a PowerCube is member-based (ie OLAP) so they work entirely differently.
4. No - see answer to 3 above.
5. See answers 2 and 1 above.
