Excel Rendering Extremely slow

I have a simple list report with 3 lists (8 columns each) and the maximum rows returned is less than 40. There is hardly any formatting on the report. The Report Query comes back in a few seconds and also does the HTML Output. But the Excel Output takes more than 10 minutes to generate. I have noticed on our servers all excel rendering takes time. Any suggestions to improve performance for Excel Outputs ?
