Hi Experts,

I have no idea on Cognos 7,
My client have few cubes that are build with Cognos 7 Series software very long back. Currently we do not have source to these cubes, We have only mdc files, Can we create a new connection in Cognos 10, and can we access cognos 7 series cubes (mdc file)?,  Currently we are using Cognos Powerplay to access these old cubes. These are not refreshed, We have other cubes in C10, these are refreshed with IBM Cognos Transformer, Client wish to migrate the old cubes, and they wish to access from Report Studio,

I have another doubt that, when we open these cubes,  it is prompting me a user name and password? May I know what exactly this username and password do,

Kindly share your ideas about the procedure to migrate cognos 7 series cubes with no source data, to C10.2

Thanks in Advance.

It sounds like your client is in a bit of a pickle here. They have cubes with no underlying Transformer model?

I seem to recall that some versions of Cognos 8 BI would allow access to cubes built in Transformer 7. I have never tried it in Cognos 10, though. it has to be worth 5 minutes of your time to investigate, I'd say. Try adding a data source connection from Cognos 10 BI to one of the cube files and then publish a package for this if you can.

If that works, you should in theory have access to the data in the cube from Cognos 10. Your challenge will be to extract that data and save it somewhere. If you have Cognos Data Manager, you can use an existing Cognos 10 package as a data source, and you could define builds in Data Manager to extract the data from the cube and write it to dimension and fact tables in a database. These could then be the basis of either an FM package or a Transformer 10 model.

If Cognos 10 won't talk to the version 7 powercubes, you might have better luck if you can get hold of a version of Cognos 8, and use this to access the data for extraction purposes as above.

Good luck!

Hi,

Thank you for your time,

At present, Client can access cubes from Cognos 7 Powerplay, But they do not want to renew the licence, so they want to access from Cognos Connection ( like report studio, query studio). They also do not want to rebuild cubes, Another main concern is, Client is not allowing to try out by in C10, they want theoretical confirmation,  we do not have permission to access Production environment.

We have C8 environment also but we are going to shut down the servers in next 1 month of time. As you says, I can try in C8, If it works in C8 and does not work in C10 means, What would be your suggestion as we are going to shutdown the server soon.

My suggestion is as above - get the data out of the cubes and put it into star schemas or new cubes that Cognos 10 supports. You can test the cubes in a different environment from their production server simply by copying the cube files (mdc) to a different environment.

Cheers!
