Crosstab Sorting Issue with In-line Query???

I am experiencing an issue with sorting 2 specific columns within a crosstab...and this is using a relational model as opposed to an OLAP.

Here is the strange issue ( at least to me):  The left row edge needs to be sorted in ascending, and also the first column.  So I set the sorting & grouping for the row edge to ascending, and then i set the Pre Sort for the column data item to ascending.

Now the crosstab is constructed as follows:

                                              Col 1         Col 2           Col 5
Parent Row | Child Row                                       Col 3     Col4
                   | Child Row

Columns 3 & 4 as seen above are nested under Col5

So, why i say this is a strange case, is because when I run this crosstab the sorting WORKS!!  But due to some requirements we had to create an in-line query based on the original query.  Now when i attempt to view the sorting when using the 2nd query, the column sorting will NOT work!

I have tried a variety of techniques to set this sorting, such as applying the sorting directly to the crosstab as well as at the individual data item level?? 

Does anyone have any idea as to why I would be experiencing this issue when using an in-line query as opposed to using just the main query??
