The message you are seeing simply means that the Cognos service in Windows did not respond to the start request in timely fashion. It is quite likely that the service eventually started successfully - just not within the short time limit MS think it should take a Windows service to start.

If you look in the Services dialog in Administrative Tools, has the IBM Cognos service started? What happens if you try to connect to your Cognos 10 instance through a browser?

Hi MFGF,

if i check the status for the cognos service in services.msc , its showing started, but when i try to access on web, its throwing a gateway error as attached below.

any idea what could be the cause for this ? any specific area i need to troubleshoot ?

So the service shows as being started but you can't connect to the gateway?

What happens if you copy the dispatcher URI (from Cognos configuration) into your browser? Do you see a horribly mangled Cognos Connection page (with no images) or do you get an error?

If you see a horribly maimed but recognisable Cognos Connection page (similar to below), that means your service is up and alive and the dispatcher is responding to requests. In this case it would point to you having not configured your web server correctly. If you see an error it means you have an issue with your C10 configuration, and you need to look in cogserver.log to understand what is wrong.

Cheers!

Hi MFGF,

Yes, service shows started but i m not able to connect to the gateway.

If i copy the dispather URI (from Cognos configuration) into my browser, it says Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage.(i know about the horribly managed screen, without graphics, but that dint appear)

cogserver.log file is also not generated.

No cogserver.log? You have a serious problem!

When you go into Cognos Configuration and test your content store connection, does it succeed? What have you defined for use as the content store?

If this is successful and you try to save and start from within Cognos Configuration, do you get chance to press the Details button as the service attempts to start? What do you see if so?

even i think its a serious issue. just follwed the regular steps for installation as i always do but got stuck this time.

When i go to Cognos Configuration and test my content store connection, it succeeds. i have mapped it to SQL DB.

I would suggest a reinstall? If you look at the transfer logs, did all of the install media copy across successfully?
