Fix packs?

Currently on 10.2.1 and am thinking about fix packs/interim fixes, however I'm a little confused by the quantity of them.  I see that there is an Interim Fix 1, Fix Pack 1, Interim Fix 2, Interim Fix 2 (10.2.1.1), Interim Fix 3, Fix Pack 2, and Interim Fix 4.

Do all of these need to be installed in order by their released date?  Or do some of them contain the previous fixes?  Sorry if this is a bit noobish, I'm just a little hesitant.

Hi,

If you install Fix Pack 1 or Fix Pack 2, you will then be on 10.2.1.1 rather than 10.2.1. Fix Pack 2 contains everything from Fix Pack 1 plus more, so it makes sense to go straight to Fix Pack 2.

For the Interim Fixes, you will then be looking at the IFs for the 10.2.1.1 instance you now have. Again later IFs contain everything from the eariler ones, so it makes sense to go straight to Interin Fix 4.

In a nutshell, if you are on 10.2.1, you should first install "Fix Pack 2", then install "10.2.1.1 Interim Fix 4"

Cheers!

Thanks!  That was my hope, now to download only FP2 and IF4 and not all the downloads.

Yep. Just be aware that FP1 had the documentation rolled into it but FP2 has the documentation in a separate install. If you want the FP2 documentation you will need to download and run both the core FP2 install and the FP2 documentation install. Both are listed together on FixCentral.

A small remark: Before installing FP2 install IF3 Dynamic Feature Bundle (this is suggested by Cognos support).
Quote
The Dynamic Query Feature Bundle, which appears on IBM Fix Central as Cognos Business Intelligence 10.2.1.1 Interim Fix 3, enables many valuable enhancements related to the dynamic query mode (DQM) including Dynamic Cubes.
The Dynamic Query Feature Bundle must be installed on top of 10.2.1 FP1 instances of Cognos BI server (application tier), Dynamic Query Analyzer, and Cube Designer.
10.2.1 FP2 can be installed on top the Dynamic Query Feature Bundle, but you cannot install the Dynamic Query Feature Bundle on top of FP2.

So my conclusion: Install FP1 -> IF3 -> FP2 -> IF4

Hi RA,

My understanding is that IF4 makes this redundant. It installs over FP2 and gives you the same Dynamic Cubes features as IF3?

Hi,

Can you confirm that IF4 inlcludes the Dynamic Query Bundle from IF3? I find extremely little information about IF4, only this page.

Has anyone installed the IF4 over FP2?

Thanks,

Hi everyone
We have Cognos BI 10.2.1 installed (cmplst.txt says 10.2.5000.175) and want to update it to the newest fix pack (FP3).  We tried to download and install FP3 (the documentation states that all fix packs are cumulative) but when we tried to install we got the error "You cannot install this version of the production over a previously installed version".  I assume that means that we must apply an earlier fix pack first (but not sure).  Have looked for help but haven't been able to find any clear simple answers.  Any advice is appreciated.
Thank-you in advance.

When you log in to Fix Central you choose the appropriate fix packs and interim fixes based on your currently installed version. When you were prompted for the installed version, did you select 10.2.1 or 10.2.1.1?

I am looking on the site now, and when you choose 10.2.1 as the installed version, the latest version fix pack available is 10.2.1-BA-CBI-Win64-FP002 - which is Fix Pack 2. If you have downloaded a Fix Pack 3 it is for the wrong build - probably 10.2?

Cheers!

Well, it seems I was completely wrong here. My profuse apologies!

The recommended approach for now is to install FP1 then IF3, then install FP2 then IF4. I have also been advised that each update makes changes to the content store, and IBM recommend the Cognos service is started and stopped between each install. Normally the later releases bunldle up what was in earlier releases, but the IF3 install breaks this for now, so the above is the currently recommended approach. I strongly suspect the next fix pack will resolve all of this, though.

Cheers!

Just to chime in here, i've heard from IBM support on this issue and they suggested installing FP001 and holding off on the FP002. They said to better wait for FP003 which is supposed to come out within a month or so.

For the record, the FP3 is available, I've just got the 10.2.1 FixPACK3 downloaded and installed on the dev environment. I've read that it's cumulative...and that it fixes a bug where warnings filled logs which made the instance crash, which sounds pretty much like what I've suffered for a few weeks until I reset all the configuration   :'(
