Itemname and Displayname

When I look at the publish tables for the dimensions (it_) it seems that itemname and displayname are identical. Would there be a circumstance that they would differ? I am asking because I have a requirement to display a specific text in a dlist item and have that same item reference something else in the publish which leads me to look at itemname and displayname. However I don't see a way to affect that sort of change using the publish. I know it is shot in the dark but any thoughts or ideas?

Thanks in advance, Dan

Pardon me my English, do you need itemname & displayname to be different, or not..?

I'm probably not the expert on this, but as I see it the only displaynames you can have different from the itemnames are on the EList. DList names in publish, both itemname and displayname, are what you enter as items in a Dlist in Analyst.

In it_ publish tables there's both for all dimensions, but you'd see different displaynames and itemnames only in the elist table if such had been applied in CAC.

I find this interesting, because every now and then you come across a situation where it would be nice to have an editable itemname/item id and display name separately for a Dlist item...

If I remember rightly you can use a translation to make them different. But I cant remember exactly how. The itemname is meant to always match the original item in analyst (except with the elist which may not exist in analyst). The displayname could be the translated name if you pick that option in publish. I think thats how it worked ;-)

That is in fact what I was asking. :) And my understanding is the same as yours.

I will look into that however I think we have pretty much discared the idea in favour of storing the required matrix in a table that we can join to when needed.

Thanks for the replies guys!
