Using a Map to highlight City Pairs

Hi,

My business has asked me to look into the possibility of showing a "network" map (aviation).

If you looked at a map of the USA, you would see lines between all the city pairs that a particular airline flies.

For example:

A line between New York and LA
a line between LA and Chicago,
etc...

Basically, we want the line red / yellow / green under certain conditions, and the ability to click the line to see details on that city pair.

(rough idea attached)

Using maps, and active reports,  could anyone make any recommendations on how I'd implement something like that?

Obviously, I have all the data in my mart to do this, it's really more about how to implement the visual treatment.

(and hopefully, using out-of-the-box Cognos 10.2 functionality as opposed to plugin like ESRI)

Any feedback is welcomed!

thanks,
david.

I doubt that line drawing is a part of standard map manager functionality. Moreover, I doubt that most US cities are on the default map.

ESRI would be a good fit. You can try playing with Google / Bing maps API if you have open internet connection.

Sorry, missed Active Reports part of it.
I would guess that drawing lines would be a major problem. You can always pregenerate number of jpgs for all filters, but it's an ugly approach.

Thanks for the reply. I figured the same thing, but always good to get confirmation in case I wasn't thinking of something.

Mapping is a big weakness within Cognos IMO.  If you can live without the visual of the map, it is possible to use one of the new RAVE visualizations called a Network Diagram to show how all the cities that are connected to a specific HUB.  These can be animated so that when you click a city, it realigns to show all the connections.  You can also probably color and size the bubbles based on # flights, connections, etc.
