Hi All,

I m new to Cognos Planning and need some help in understanding few things about this tool. We have Planning Analyst 10.1 and Contributor installed on our machines. in the filesys.ini the maximum number of users = 7.
is this 7 equal to number of licenses we have ? Where can I find the license information ? Somehow our sysadmin does not seem to know that info as the old ones left the job. Also, is this 7 applies to contributor login as well ?
I also see that in the filesys.ini there is a section [userdefaults] under which there are 7 user names mentioned. I m not sure what that means. The analyst users are added into the Active Directory Group and given rights to the server folder path where Analyst resides. Can you guys help me understand this ?
I really appreciate your time.
Thanks!
Sameer

Hi Sameer,

The number of concurrent users is exactly as it sounds; you can only have up to 7 people in analyst at the same time.  Now, back in older versions you would usually have this set based on the number of licenses you had.  In recent versions there is nothing preventing you from modifying that value.

This number does not affect contributor in terms of signons.  One thing to note is that you are able to execute analyst macros from the CAC, when you do so the system will consume one analyst signon until it's done running the macro.

The section called userdefaults is likely brought over from an unprade; either way that section is no longer used in 10.1.  In fact, only the top 6 or 7 lines are used in the filesys.  All signon credential information will be stored in a third party provider, in your case AD, and you will manage these individuals access to the product through cogno connection.

Hope this helps.

Thank You Eric for you reply! So as you said that max users can be reset to a different number I was just wondering if the number of license we have purchased should be equal to that ? Is there any legal restriction from the IBM in resetting that number or in the IT auditing ?

Thanks!

There is no restriction as there is no license management software present in the product to prevent increasing this value.
