Report Studio on Active Report

I am finding a little bit tricky when using the active report in 10.1. I want to use to create a row of buttons or tabs (which a query by itself) to serve as a interactive filter to another crosstab, so what I press on the button, that will serve as a filter for another crosstab. I can do it with Data Tab Control tool but I dont have any successes dealing with other active report tools. The nexus of the the two queries is the Master detail relationship where I can specify when I do a right click of the crosstab. However this is only appears in the data tab control tool and not the other. The rest of the active report tool seems to have this relationship dimmed. Is this the only way to make the report interactive?
