I need to design a dashboarding solution. With so many options available I was wondering which would be the right solution

Report Studio
POrtals
Business Insight
Active reports

Can you tell which should be use where

saumil287

Hi,
If you are already having multiple reports saved then use Business Insight to create a dashboard provided you are having the requirements (ie what contents needs to be placed in a dashboard, if your existing saved reports (such as charts , graphs) fulfills the requirements then use Business Insight, else if you want an offline view of report, use Active reports else use Report studio(which I used the most).
Portals are used to combined multiple reports in one viewer where as Business Insight is also a combination of multiple saved reports.
Kindly give your feedbacks if any I am missing.

Can users be given the ability to add portlets or modify portlets...What are the disadvantages of Portal pages option

saumil287

Hi,
You can give access permissions for a set of users or user to edit /create a new Portal page.
There are no disadvantages of using portal pages as such.

i agree with saumil, BI is a nice tool in case of existing reports AND these reports are standard reports.
Report Studio is the powerfull tool to create repots in general, if you need fast ad hoc analysis or simple reports, use Business Insight Advanced.
Active reports are great not only for offline usage, but also for nice designed and interactive reports. BUT: you have to put some extra effort into it.

If you come up with more details about the request i might give you more advise...do you need many options to filter the data on? Do you need many different dimension? Many different subportals? What about performance? How much data?

There is best practive for everything, every tool has its advantages and disadvantages ;)
cheerz :P
