Hello,

I've been attempting to find information on which services I need to disable in a COGNOS 10.1.1 CM (Content Manager) \Gateway instance install, and the same for a RS (Report Server) instance install.
Originally I had this setup in Cognos 8, but in Cognos 10 there are new services such as Annotation, Graphics, Human task...ect.  I've read the description of what they all do, but still I'm not certain which ones to disable.
Here is a list of what services show Cognos Configuration on my CM install
Annotation service
Content Manager service
Delivery service
Event Management service
Graphics service
Human Task service
Job service
Monitor service
Presentation service
Report Data service

And the following list is what shows up in my RS configuration
Agent Service
Annotation service
Batch report sevice
Delivery service
Dispatcher Service
Event Management service
Graphics service
Human Task service
Index data service
Index search service
Index update service
Job service
Metadata Service
Monitor service
Presentation service
Query Service
Report Data service
Report Service

I think it's safe to assume that the services that do not appear in CM, but do in RS (or vice versa) need to remain enabled, but really not sure which ones to disable for the services that are repeated in both configurations in order to improve performance, and ensure the specific install instance performs the correct tasks.

Any help with the above would be greatly appeciated.
Cheers

If I understand correctly you want a multi-server install where one is just the Gateway service and the second is the Report et all service?

If this is the case your best bet is to go to the gateway server - uninstall everything - yup
Then reinstall - ONLY selecting Gateway service this time.

On the second server you can install everything - having the gateway service isn't going to harm anything here and may help troubleshoot in the future.

On the Gateway machine run Cognos Config and point to the Dispatcher URI to the Report Service server and the Controller URI to the Gateway server

Save close
Make sure you have the IIS entries in the Gateway machine.

This will put your Web Server / Gateway Server on Server 1 - and everything else on Server 2

If you are attempting to do something other than set up Gateway Server then I do appologize for wasting your time.

Thanks MMCBride - I appreciate your thoughts on the issue, but I am attempting to seperate the Content Manager from the Report Server so that if the Report Server fails, my access to Cognos Connection is Ok, and if I have a 2nd Report Server then it could handle all other requests.

Also the other reason is so that the Report Servers java processes do not have to start up all the individual services that are required for the Content Manager.  So by seperating the two components would mean that there are two java processes (one for Content Manager, and one for the Report Server).  This would allow the system to run smoothly with out having 1 large java process attempting to do multiple functions, and the individual services would start up faster.

Chapter 4 in the Cognos 10 IBM Cognos Install Guide talks about how to set up what you are looking for.

Chapter 8 then goes into the details of setting each up.
Chapter 13 also has additional details

I guess what I am saying is you really need to go over the Install and Config guide closely before deploying.

Unfortunately I don't think there is an easy answer to your question since there are alot of different options and only you can decide what is best for you.
