Query Studio Prompts

I'm trying to create a prompt that uses either a search/select prompt OR a type-in box.  However, everytime I try to create a prompt using a filter, it only displays a list when 'Prompt each time report is run' is checked. 

I'm trying to filter on a column that has thousands of possible selection and the list box only shows a small percentage of them.

What's the best practice for this situation?

Update:  I figured it out.  In Framework manager, you have to select the query subject and go to the prompt properties.  From there you can change the settings from "server determined" to whatever you would like.  Save and republish and it will work.
