Hi.

Has anyone been successful with this? I'm using the "Manage External Data" feature to upload a table from Excel containing a list of email addresses. The table upload fine, and runs.

Once the table has been uploaded I add the the new burst query to my burst options as a burst recipient and define the master-detail relationship.

THe problem is when i try to burst the report during runtime. I get the following error:

Original Error: QE-DEF-0285 The logon failed.  QE-DEF-0514 Personal data needs to be uploaded from a user file.  RQP-DEF-0068 Unable to connect to at least one database during a multi-database attach to 3 database(s) in:

My guess?  The report is prompting for the location of the external file each time it runs.  Did you enable the option to automatically load the external data file at runtime?

I have the same problem and the option to automatically load is selected. Had anyone gotten this to work?

In fact, I can't seem to use external data at all when bursting. My first attempt was using a source with email address information I wanted to burst on (as the original post described). My second attempt was using just some other reference data integrated into a report that was burst.

I get the same error as the original post. Perhaps we can't burst when external data is in the mix?

There seems to be an issue when trying to run a report using external data in batch. I don't think bursting per se is the issue - I see the same problem if I just try to run a report and save the output.

My advice would be to log a PM request with IBM.

Cheers!

Bumping this one up

Well... I guess I will join in on the fun.  I too am seeing the same situation 10.1.1 FP2.  Has anyone gotten past this... Lynn?

Lynn

I abandoned efforts on it. We are about to move to 10.2 and I will try to re-test there to see if it is any different.

I got this to work by putting the External Data File in a folder on a shared server and then to reference it with UNC when adding it to the report/creating the new package.  Automatically Load the Data File at Run time must be checked, obviously.

I am Getting the same error.Tried saving the file in a shared folder and referencing it using UNC. nothing worked.any suggestions where to save the file so that the cognos server would be able to access it.!!

I can confirm it works fine using 10.2.1 with FP5 and using 10.2.2. I think the issue back then was with a specific build of Cognos 10. Using the versions I mention here, as long as the data file is on a shared drive accessible from the Cognos server via a UNC name, and provided you have enabled the option to automatically load the external data file at runtime, it should work fine.

Cheers!

We are using version 10.1.1 ..Is there any workaround for this version? And would it create a problem if shared folder is password protected ?

If I recall, the problem I was having was with 10.1.1. I suspect it's an issue in that build. If it doesn't work, it doesn't work - you'd probably need to upgrade or install a fix pack to get a working solution.

I doubt password-protected files can be used. There's no facility to enter or save a password for an external file, so I'd expect access would simply fail.
