Hi,

I have installed Cognos 8.4 on Win2003 server which was working as expected however now I am not able to access cognos using IE which shows 'Service Unavailable' after installation of Datastage on same box.

Cognos Service is up and running but problem browsing Cognos portal through IE and IIS. Even Dispatcher link is also working fine.

Could please anyone tell me that this is the impact of Datastage installation on same box? and how can I resolve this issue?

Check the IIS application pool being used by Cognos.  Also check the Windows event viewer application log which will likely show you some errors.

Generally you need to make sure that Cognos uses its own appliction pool and not the default.

to confirm you can get access to your portal test the following URI's which will need to be captured from your IBM Cognos Configuration settings under environments

http://<Cognos Server>:<Dispatcher port>/p2pd/servlet
http://<Cognos Server>:<Dispatcher port>/p2pd/servlet/gc
http://<Cognos Server>:<Dispatcher port>/p2pd/servlet/dispatch

If you can confirm that the content Manager is up and running and the dispatchers are up and running then its a problem with the Gateway and more likely with IIS.

Hi Peter,

I have checked that Dispatcher & Content Manager is up and running by accessing suggested URIs.

It seems that issue is with IIS; more of ApplicationPools. Could you please guide me how can I create Cognos specific Application Pool rather than using default one?

Thanks.

S.G.D.

Hi Shirish,

Depends on the IIS version but I think IIS 6 is being used by 2003

Hope this helps

Yes, Win2003 uses IIS 6.0 version. I tried to follow the below stpes given in link provided by you but could not implement it from step 3. it is not described clearly about cgi-bin whether its a virtual directory or something else.

1.Create a new application pool - right click on Application Pools folder, select New > Application Pool...
2.Select Use default settings for new application pool.
3.Right click on either crn or cgi-bin (If you do crn, it will add cgi-bin automatically) and select Properties.
4.Click Create to the right hand side of Application.
5.From the Application_pool: drop down list, select your new application pool.

Any suggestion?

Hi there,

Ok thanks for the update.
Can you tell me if you've bounced the web server?  (Reboot)
What errors or messages are you seeing in the event viewer for applications on the webserver (Gateway)

With the application pool, when you create the Cognos alias its generally always a virtual directory.  You create the virtual directory for the webcontent folder, and as part of this you create the application pool.  You then create a virtual sub directory for cgi-bin which should inherit the application pool of the parent virtual directory.

If you can let me know what the errors are I'll see what I can find out for you.
Sorry for  the delay

Hi Peter,

I am not getting any error message and my Dispatcher & Content Manager URIs also working as expected. But when I browse 'cognos8' virtual directory in IIS or http://servername/cognos8/ link in IE it shows 'Service Unavailable'.

Please refer attached the screenshot for the same.

Hi there,

I've attached a screenshot of what I'd expect to see for a correctly set up application pool for c8
As you can see the parent application pool for C8 is at the same level as the DefaultAppPool.  The c8 cgi-bin virtual directory is a child of the c8 virtual Directory.
You will also notice that there is a green dot which indicates that this application pool has been started.

Steps to add an application pool
1.   Right click on Application Pools
2.   Select New Application Pool
3.   Leave the option to use default settings

Steps to add C8 to new application pool
1.    Select the cgi-bin virtual directory
2.    Right click and select properties
3.    Change the Application pool to the new application pool.
You should now see the cgi-bin folder under the new application pool.  You should also see the green dot indicating the application pool has been started.

Did you check the the event viewer application logs to see if there are any w3svc-wp errors
E.g. This was what we saw when we had this error.
"The script started from the URL '/pimart_dev/cgi-bin/cognos.cgi' with parameters '' has not responded within the configured timeout period.  The HTTP server is terminating the script."

Generally a reboot of the web server does tend to resolve the issue.

While you are attempting to resolve this IIS issue you can do the following

If you have a Separate Gateway to the Dispatcher (Application tier) or even if you have a single install perform the following steps and then use the dispatcher URI to access the Cognos Portal

1.  Locate the ../<c8install>/webcontent folder
2.  Copy all content under the webcontent folder except for the samples and documentation folders.
3.  Locate the ../<c8install>/webapps/p2pd folder
4.  Paste the copied content into the ../<c8install>/webapps/p2pd folder
5.  Open a browser
6.  Enter the dispatcher URI
You should now see the IBm Cognos Connection Portal as if you had used the web alias.

Hope this helps

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the suggestion. It started working with Dispatcher URI after following given steps.  :)

However, this is workaround solution, hence requesting you to please advise how can I resolve this issue permanently?

Hi there,

Ok so looking at the error seems to indicate that IIS is attempting to run in 32bit and 64 bit mode which wont work
See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/894435

Verify that an application pool worker process is running for a Web site or application

To verify that an application pool worker process is running:

1.  Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Administrative Tools.
2.  Right-click Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager and select Run as administrator.
3.  In the Connections pane, select the computer name.
4.  In Features View, under the Feature Name column heading, double-click the Worker Processes management feature. A list of currently active application pools and worker processes will appear.
5.  Examine the application pool corresponding to the Web site or application that uses the ISAPI filter. The State column for the worker process will indicate Running if the worker process is running.

Quick question here - Is this server 32bit of 64 bit and what version of DataStage did you install assuming this is when the problem began?

Did you install a 64 bit version of Cognos BI Server?

Cheers
