Having trouble importing external data.  I am logged on as a Cognos System Administrator.

I created a report in Report Studio and exported the results as XLS.  This XLS will serve as my external data.

I start with a new list report.  Next, I click on the Manage External Data (green icon).  The "Manage External Data" dialog box opens.  However, the box is blank.  The New, Edit and Delete icons are grayed out.  The Package Name box is blank.  When I click on the ellipses, a "Save As" window appears.

Any ideas why I am not prompted to search for my external data file?

Hey Texanfritz!

When you mean export to XLS, did you run your report as a XLS 2007 and save as after that, if so  once you export as an XLS, the external data wizard wont be able to read it, there is some formatting required.

See my new post, http://www.cognoise.com/community/index.php/topic,13257.0.html

(see attachment),  does your screen look the same as mine for a "Manage External Data Window"?

Thanks
Jonathan

I do not get that screen at all.  That is what I was expecting according to the documentation I have.

Nothing seems to occur after I click on the "Manage External Data" icon.

When you open report studio, do you have a package loaded in the left corner? and a List or blank template?   Once you have the package loaded,  Manage Data sources should be available.

If you right click your package, and click external data, im assuming you will get the same issue (grayed out),   let me ponder on this one for you.

Might be a problem with firewall?  When I use IE on the app server, the External Data wizard works.  When I connect from my desktop, it does not.  Might be IIS, firewall?

any thought?

Hi,

It may be that your user does not have the capability to import External Data assigned.  You can check this if you:
a) log in as an administrative user
b) launch the Admin Console
c) go to the Security tab
d) select 'capabilities' on the left
e) scroll through until you see 'Report Studio' and click on it
f) set the properties of the 'Allow External Data' capability
g) go to the Permissions tab

If your user id or a group your user belongs to is not listed, you do not have the capability assigned.  To assign the capability, add your user (or a group you belong to) and grant Traverse and Execute privileges.

Regards,

MF.

Here is more information....

When I am working directly on the C10 server (all-in-one server) as Cognos System Administrator, I am able to click on the "Manage External Data" (green) icon and two dialog windows open; "Manage External Data" and "External Data".  The "External Data" window is the wizard that walk you through adding new external data source to the package.  I am using IE, version 8.0.6001.19019.

Now, I have switched and I am working on a separate workstation.  I connect to our C10 server through IE as the same Cognos System Administrator.  I open Report Studio and create a new List Report.  When I click on the "Manage External Data" (green) icon, only one dialog window opens; "Manage External Data".  The "External Data" wizard window never opens.  I noticed the following error in IE version 8.0.76300.16385:

Message: 'this._CH9' is null or not an object
Line: 73475978
Char: 980
Code: 0
URI: http://www.<SERVERADDRESS>/ibmcognos/pat/rsapp.htm

Any thoughts?

Hi,

I use Firefox for all my Cognos operations,  it may be IE related.

This resolved the "External Data" wizard window issue I was having.

In IIS 7 webserver:
- Navigate to "server management > error pages > 500 > edit feature settings"
- Set detailed error for error 500.

Hey Texan, we believe we have the same problem, but I don't understand the solution you describe.  Sounds like you just changed the content of the 500 error screen...which doesn't seem like it would address the problem.  Is there more?  Or can you provide a bit more detail as to the steps required?
Thanks!

jrgchip

To be clear...we are using IE 6.0 and Firefox 3.6 and in neither case do we get an error response at all.  So changing from custom to detailed error output, by itself, doesn't help.

Or might it be that the error is being generated and that IE is suppressing it.  Report Studio (C10) runs in its own window where there is no status bar of the like.

ctsvishnu

Hi,
In our case, I import the file and set the relation and when i tried to publish it keep on trying and ended with an error SOAP the server went wrong..

Could you please help me out to solve this issue.
