At database level : There must be columns that depict multilingual data. For eg. ProductName_EN, ProductName_FR, etc.
At FM level : Define the multilingual parameter map. Either for locale or for user. (As you have said, you are working on a single machine, I think multilingual support using locales may be not useful)
At Report Studio level : Define Language variables and display appropriate columns wherever necessary.

Hope this gives a first level info on what needs to be done. For further info, you can see the user guides of FM and Report Studio. They cover the topic exhaustively.

We are currently working on a big multilingual project (3 languages) and we have made quite a lot of progress on the way. I believe there aren't that many people would need multilingual tactics, so perhaps I can help you through a PM. We are quite recently working on 8.4 as well and I'm very pleased with Cognos regarding the multilingual tooling..

Hi Bloom,

Do you have any ideas about multilingual considerations into the header of a list without using a FM (direct SQL) ?

Regards

No..  Using straight SQL simply defies using a premium model based BI tool in the first place. It seperates mature solutions from quick solutions

I've also made a few multilingual models. Frameworks capabilities makes these kinds of things much simpler. Having to do this in straight SQL would be a major nightmare.

Blom, I'd be very interested in hearing of your experiences with multilingual model.

We actually use simply what Cognos offers , combined with some input from a session with a fellow Moderator (ReportNet Addict) who we hired for a day..

One of the challenges was a dynamic translation of lookup codes (data translations instead of labels) by means of a database function and 1 generic lookup table containing a normalized set of all codes/languages. By using aliases we use this lookup table everywhere in our models.

I'm - still - truly impressed by Cognos 8 modelling especially where multilanguage requirements are concerned. The main effort is in getting all elements in reports (titles/calculations/comments) dynamically translated. Not very complex, just a lot of work.
