Hi Gurus,

Is anybody using Cognos 8.4.1, and do you think 8.4.1 is not as stable as 8.4.

By the way what is the next version of Cognos, ver 9?

Thanks

We've just upgraded to Cognos 8.4.1, and so far we've not had any problems.  Are you?  What type?

for instance

when you Launch Query Studio (or Report Studio), and from the list of packages in the Packages folder, if you want to scroll to the next set of packages, the next 15 packages don't appear.

Cognos 8 BI 8.4.1 FP2 has been released yesterday. Maybe have a look to see if your issue has been corrected..

Thanks. I checked the fix list, and it is not listed there. I installed the fix pack and it hasn't been fixed yet.

Hi,

What happens if you change "Number of entries in list view" under Preferences from 15 to say 50?

This seems to work for me.

oh yeah there are workarounds, but we would have to address all the 500 odd end users to make this change, which we want to avoid if possible. I mean this is not a new complicated feature. It has been working flawlessly since ReportNet 1.0. Not sure why Cognos decided to mess it up for all 3 latest versions 8.4.1, FP1 and FP2...  :(

Overall 8.4.1 seems to be very stable (in my case, anyway).

The next version will likely not be 9.

oh yeah I know what you mean, I heard about it today.

Official word from Cognos

The workaround is to set your user's preferences to show a larger number of items ('Number of entries in list view').    This problem is corrected in future releases of the product.   :(

I heard a rumor that the next version will be "IBM Cognos 10" and it's a complete re-write.  It'll be totally 64-bit.  Guess we'll see...

mvjcognos

yes correct next version is cognos 10

CognosBob68

Hi,

I think you will be disappointed it you are expecting a ground up re-write as that would tend to suggest that there are major issues with the architecture and functionality of 8.4 which there arn't.  This isn't going to be in the same league as moving from Impromptu Web Reports to ReportNet as that happens very rarely.  Cognos 8.4 is generally sound but it does have some areas that needed to be improved and that is what IBM really focused on with a few more bells and whistles of course.

tupac_rd

maybe when he meant complete rewrite, he meant moving away from 32 bit altogether to 64... good to hear that they are not changing much in the newer version, since that will atleast make sure we don't have to rework on javascript and other such customizations....

CognosBob68

Yes your  probably right.  It would make sense to bring up those component such as the Metric content to 64 bit and avoid all the nigly configuration options you have to do currently.  For backward compatability I will imagine though that a 32 bit version will be around for a little bit longer.

Without mentioning any of the functionality I think IBM have got the balance just about right and they haven't decided to chuck the baby out with the bath water but just enhance those areas where Cognos 8.4 was at its weakest. But its only in beta so you never know it could all change over the next few months so still and wait and see...

Cheers

Do bear in mind that the changes being discussed in this thread are all just speculation on the part of the posters.  IBM will not divulge what specific functionality or changes are upcoming in future releases nor when they may be available.

MF.

So, what are the latest versions of Cognos 8 and Cognos 10?

We are trying to decide which one for our Planning upgrade.  Any preferences?
