Hi,

Is this still using your Cognos Express install?  If so, the Reporter component does not use a traditional web server - it supports connections directly via the dispatcher (using the bundled Tomcat instance).

The Xcelerator component *does* use an IIS web server though, so you will most likely have a configured IIS instance.  There is no point in setting up a 'cognos8' virtual directory for this, though - the Express Manager installer for Xcelerator should set up all the required virtual directories for you.

Hi.

I pointed out to you in a previous post that the Cognos Express trial version is not the same as Cognos 8.  You cannot use Cognos 8 installation instructions and expect them to work with Cognos Express!!!! :)

Cognos Express uses parts of the Cognos 8 architecture for the Reporter module (including Cognos Connection, Query Studio and Report Studio) but web access to this module does not use either an Apache or an IIS web server.  Instead, web access is via the inbuilt Tomcat server which is installed and configured by the Cognos Express Manager component.

You cannot (and should not) configure either Apache or IIS to try to connect to Cognos Express reporter, as Express does not install the relevant gateway component suitable for use with either of these web servers.

If you install the Express Xcelerator module via Manager, you will find that this does use IIS as a web server, but this technology is lifted from the Cognos TM1 product, not Cognos 8, so setting up a 'Cognos 8' virtual directory will not help you.  For Xcelerator, all the relevant IIS virtual directories are set up for you by Manager during the install.

Bottom line - there is no need for you to mess with web servers or web server virtual directories for Cognos Express.  All the relevant access methods to the various modules are set up for you automatically via Manager when you install each module.

MF.

Once you have a connection to your database, the next step is to create a metadata model which describes the relevant parts of your data (tables, views etc) and how they are joined, and models them in a suitable form for reporting.  This is done using Framework Manager.  Once the modelling has been done, you will need to publish a package to your Cognos Express server, and then use either Query Studio or Report Studio to build a report based on this package.

You *cannot* use this kind of URL with Cognos Express.  The URL above is pointing to the Cognos 8 gateway (cognos.cgi) and as I explained earlier, Cognos Express does not install a gateway of this kind for use with a web server.  It will not work with Cognos Express. Cognos Express is not Cognos 8.  Just fire up Manager and use the link from there to launch Cognos Connection.

Looks to me like the configuration for Framework Manager is not set up to point to the correct Cognos Express server.  If you look in your install folder for Express and locate the Framework Manager install folder, you should find a cogconfig.exe in the bin folder within Framework Manager.  Run this and check the Environment settings to see what URIs it currently has configured (and correct these if necessary).
