This is actually pretty easy, all you need to do is ensure that you change the default install directory (ie instead of c8 use c8.4) and then change the shortcut location for the start menu. After the install you need to ensure all the ports in Cognos Configuration are changed (with the exception of port 80 for the gateway uri), so for example the default port is 9300 change it to 9301 same goes for all the others, either go up or down one number and you will be fine. Just make sure your PC can support more than one JVM at a time otherwise you will run into SERIOUS problems with performance and might even start getting SOAP faults if you run out of memory.

Let me know how it works out for you

Also make sure you have 2 separate content store.

1 for each version.

...and rename your service. they must be unique.
This is not necessary. The Service with default Port 9300 is named "IBM Cognos 8", Cognos-Services on other ports are automatically named "IBM Cognos 8:PORTNUMBER".
